Reading – Please encourage your child to read for a minimum of 10 to 15 minutes a day. Reading skills are necessary for success with the second-grade curriculum. Students especially need strong phonics skills, such as knowing digraphs, trigraphs, and blends. Click here for examples and ideas.
The SmartyAnts program your child used in first grade is an excellent way for your child to continue to work on reading skills over the summer, too.
Memorization of Addition Facts – Second graders need to have addition facts memorized without counting. They should be able to answer each fact within two seconds. If your child is capable, beginning to memorize subtraction facts would be an advantage.
